-NEWLY FINISHED PRIZES- Winner Results!

Tue Jan 5, 2010, 11:47 AM
NEW: It was my new years resolution to finish these. Last year. But anyways. I can't give dates but prizes are still getting done. Have two more! Now only two more to go! Plus me uploading my dang drawings from the music video. Hur.

From Round 3: Alejo [link]
From Round 4: Idesta fanfic from chibisilverwings, Subaru, Derrek [link] Lydia [link]
From Round 5: Idesta [link]

EDIT to the the third powa: HI. Believe it or not, we're still alive! And we still owe you stuff. Oof. Well I'm going to say that the issue is that school always whops people more than they think it will. I'm still making super slow progress on the video, but more importantly this is about PRIZES. I want to ask the people from round 4 Would any of you (Idesta, Subaru, Derrek, Lydia) want fanfiction from me(chibisilverwings) instead of a drawing as a prize? I'd need MORE REFERENCES, because writing for people can be tough without knowledge. BUT, I want to open the offer. PLEASE NOTE CHIBISILVERWINGS, not this account.

The final round runner up prize for Idesta is started I believe, but not done. And the music video will be posted as soon as I'm done. I swear.

---------

EDIT 2: Prize drawings are still making slow progress, however, I am hoping to be finished with the music video within about 3 weeks. This is kinda the VERY last call. If you have a drawing to submit for the video PLEASE note me (ChibiSilverWings). I want a chance to draw anyone who wants to be part of it. I have about 6 or 7 more drawings to do anyways, but I want to give you all a last chance. I'll be open to new pictures for about two more weeks. Sorry for taking so long!

And we haven't forgotten about prizes, we'll let you know as we finish them. If there's something we're missing, let me know and remind me, I miss some obvious things sometimes. I think our deadline for the prizes is the end of March. Hopefully we can live up to that.
-------

EDIT: We're still going to get through all the prizes that people are missing from the rounds. This is for now, a reminder to us, but it will be updated when prizes are added!

From Round 4: Idesta fanfic from chibisilverwings, Subaru, Derrek [link] Lydia
From Round 5: Idesta (Subaru get's the grand prize, so Idesta has a runner-up drawing)

Sorry this one was late, 5 of our wonderful judges were asked to write who they chose to win and why. There was no form so they’re all a bit different but each person tells why they picked who. Thanks again to both of you!

Feralphoenix: I loved the three sets of writing, it made the pacing very nice. The opening segment was so cool. For me reading it had a great deal of flow and rhythm which made it an all the more pleasant experience. Subaru is inventive and versatile and it allows for variety in battles. The flow and writing was consistently fun to read and even when something was underdeveloped inside the story, I could tell how much planning went in the author’s notes.

Mizamour: Something I’ve ALWAYS adored about her entries is Idesta’s thought processes and the forged connections she makes with current characters, her past, and the future. It builds so well and is so satisfying to read. The other thing I love is the inventiveness with plant choices. All through this contest her work has been solid and thoughtful. Especially in this round at the end I was saying “She totally gets my point for this contest!” I always loved that.

I give this point to Feral. Though both have delivered high quality work throughout, Miz’s piece this round lacked a bit of its usual clarity and structure. It made the battle seem a bit less satisfying. Both of you deserve high praise for your awesome entries and I at least hope that our finale will provide a worthy prize for all your hard work.

You do not know how much I procrastinated and whined about having to judge this last round. Picking between Feral and Miz's entries was like having to pick between Leroux and Hugo. It's not a fair choice to have to make, and later on, when I realize again that I cannot have the other, I will die a little inside again.

So, after much debating, and even a coin toss or two (twenty-two), my choice is going to have to be Mizamour's entry. Feral's had a fantastic build and form to the plot, and her fighting was easier to follow. However, Mizamour's had the stylistic drama that set off a final entry so much better. You had a real feeling that this was the penultimate moment, that she'd climbed up high and reached the peak. And I just eat up dramatic language like that, especially when it's been so elegantly written, without a trace of corniness.

Both entries had some characterization problems and strengths. Miz's had a Subaru that I thought accurately depicted Feral's character, but her Tsushi was a little bland. On the other hand, Feral wrote an utterly superb Tsushi, with all the silliness and impatience that makes her so complex. But Feral's Idesta was subpar, her drastic actions not believable within the context of the story. Had Idesta's desperate rage been given more context, my vote could have turned out very differently.

Again, I would like to thank both writers for participating. I was so thrilled to read your entries this time, because I can say that, without a shred of doubt, you two are my favorite amateur (or at least unpublished. Yet, right gals?) authors. The things I've read both of you write over the years have always been a pleasure for me to read, and I do plan to keep on reading what you both write, contest or no contest.

I thought that both wrote splendidly and really deserved these last two places for their continued efforts and well-written prose. Neither short changed their stories and cut corners, they both made the effort that was needed. In saying that, it is difficult to choose a winner.

I enjoyed feralpheonix's because the story really captured the characters personalities well, especially Tsushi's whimsical-ness. There wasn't a lot of build up to the main fight, which I actually liked that I didn't have to read the process of getting there more before the real story began. There was a lot of good tension in the fight scene, although the setting itself felt a little lost to me and I couldn't place the characters in a distinct setting.

Mizamour on the other hand did a very nice job at setting the scene and describing the surrounds. I could really imagine the fight and every action of it as well as the castle's look and feel. However, the short journey TO the castle was a tad confusing. I also really liked how you used the personalities of the characters to make an end agreement instead of definite winner. It seems that, in that situation and with those two characters, this end seemed very logical and not forced into some sort of bloody kill or something.

In the end, I have decided that I think that feralpheonix should win because of the characterization. I think that the story was well written and everything was clear and a lot of fun to read. I really enjoyed your opening and thought that was a very fun way of beginning the last portion of this contest.

Results from :iconhappyfaceanon: who helped every. Single. Round. Thank you so much for being consistently awesome!

Feralphoenix
I really enjoyed the way Feral portrayed Tsushi. It was spot on. Also, the emphasis on certain words worked well during the battle as it captured the character’s rage well. Although I think that emphasis on certain words was used in places where it wasn’t necessary. The battle itself was also balanced well, with Feral not favoring her own character too much. That’s something that many professional writers still need to learn, so I appreciate that. I liked the dialog a lot too. I think that good dialog really brings a character to life and sets the mood for the situation. My only complaint is that I didn’t really feel in the story. I got a great sense of the characters and their emotions, but the atmosphere was a little weak. Overall it was a very solid entry.

Mizamour
Right away I noticed that Miza has a talent for creating a good atmosphere and setting. Miza really brings you into the story. I get a great sense of the world from Miza’s descriptions. I can really imagine where the characters are. I feel that the characters are really brought to life through their actions, more than their dialog. The dialog was a little weak, but by no means bad. Overall I enjoyed it a lot.

In the end, I have to give it to Mizamour. I have to admit, it was very close. Both entries were great, but I was more drawn into the world with the way that Miza wrote it. It was hard to choose and I must say that both Feral and Miza are talented writers. They have potential to really go far if they keep at it and keep improving. I think that this contest should help them both, especially writing another persons character as their own. It’ll be interesting to see what they write in the future.

From :icongaelic:
I spent a fair amount of time looking over both entries, and there's a lot that I could say about both, but I was asked to keep this as short as possible, so here goes. It was difficult judging these based on any technical merit because in my eyes at least they are extremely close. Because of that, I'm making my decision simply based on the outcome. For this reason, I have to choose Feral to win. The entry was simply better thought out, and did what I had expected an entry to do, which was to make a case for their character winning. While I did like that Miz worked out a way for neither to lose, I don't feel that that was the goal of the tournament. And, because both where so phenomenally written, in the end, that's what my judgment had to come down to.

Mizamour: 2
FeralPhoenix: 3

Congrats to :iconferalphoenix:! Both of you will be in the final, tentatively finished at the start of February. All of the people in the music video project will see the results of that HOPEFULLY around the same time. I'm still accepting pictures and I'm thankful for those already in.

Both of you have prizes to claim and I'll work on making sure you get all of them. Note me with anything you need.
